Lemurs

Ten species of lemurs had been seen in the Masoala National Park. The Varecia variegata is represented by the red-ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata rubra) an endemic sub-species to the peninsula. Four of the lemur species in Masoala are included in the category of the mostly threatened primates in the IUCN red list : Varecia variegata rubra, Allocebus trichotis, Daubentonia madagascariensis (Aye aye) and the Phaner furcifer.

Lemurs belong to the order primates, and are cousins of monkeys No one knows how lemurs ended up in Madagascar.
It is one of the numerous mysteries of the island.
