Tourists may be interested in one of several river
trips available in the area. These trips are a great alternative to boat trips
to the bay if the sea is too rough. You may travel in a traditional dugout
canoe, or choose to travel in a small, motorized boat. One suggested trip is on
the route to Navana, to the northeast of Maroantsetra. You can travel in a
privately hired dugout canoe, or elect to travel in a public canoe with local
residents. In a maze of channels between rice fields and river grasses, you
might surprise a kingfisher on a branch, or glide along with a flock of domestic
ducks. This trip is especially beautiful at sunrise or near sunset. It is
important to bring sunscreen on river trips. An umbrella is also suggested

It is best to travel with a local guide who can act as your
translator and navigator. Your guide can help you arrange your trip.
