Understanding the Basics of SHORAD

SHORAD or short-range air defense is one of three crucial parts of the defense system against aerial attacks. The first is THAAD or terminal high altitude area defense.

The second is HIMAD or high to medium air defense. And of course, SHORAD is the third category. The names of all parts are pretty much self-explanatory of what they are meant to do. 

Features of the Best SHORAD Systems

There are many different kinds of SHORAD systems that are in use by countries around the world today. Each of these systems has its own unique capabilities and functions. Here are some of the most notable features. 

High Accuracy 

The main goal of SHORAD systems is to defend against incoming aerial attacks. Some of these attacks are tricky to detect with precision. For instance, the PGM, C-RAM, ABTs and dense salvos can be hard to detect by some systems. Thus, it is crucial to have extremely high accuracy in detecting threats. A good SHORAD system should be just as accurate in deploying countermeasures in order to intercept the spotted attack. 

Integrated Weapons Systems

A dependable SHORAD system should focus on not just one or two areas of defense. Instead, they should be more versatile to give comprehensive defense. The best ones include multiple integrated weapons meant to target a variety of attacks. They should provide a high level of defense against aerial attacks from planes, helicopters and other low-flying aircraft. In addition, they should also be able to defend against land threats such as tanks. They must also have the ability to counter artillery shells, mortars and rockets.

Seamless Communication

Even as a standalone defense unit, any SHORAD system must be able to maintain constant and clear communication with the command and control center. This will ensure that all units will have full situational awareness at all times. It also minimizes the risk of deviating from the line of command due to gaps in communication.
